The use of algae to make bio-fuels has been experimented with in the U.S. since the U.S. Dept. of Energy funded the Aquatic Species Program in 1978. The project was shut down in 1995, but since then several U.S. Universities such as the University of New Hampshire as well as national and worldwide corporations have continued research in hopes of perfecting the process and using bio-fuels made from algae to power aircrafts and for various other purposes.
