Certainly! I’ve linked to a list of 14 mainstream, high-end designers/brands that have begun to make strides towards being eco-friendly. The list includes such brands as Rodarte, Ferragamo, and Gucci.
Yes! Stella McCartney and Rogan Gregory have devoted whole lines of fashion to sustainable fabrics like bamboo and hemp cloth. Also, large clothing producers such as Timberland and The Gap have made concerted efforts towards institutionalizing sustainable, eco-friendly business practicies (insituting fair labor practices and reducing carbon emissions).
A popular designer, and winner of Project Runway, Seth Aaron Henderson is creating a solar powered collection. Using solar panels to create fashion, but at the same time, creating energy. And there will be many renewable energy sponsors. This is for his spring/summer 2011 collection, at it will be showcased at Portland Fashion Week, October 9th, in Portland, OR, the nation’s greenest city. Seems like a perfect location.
This might be more high fashion, but Casey Larkin, Susan Woo, Ada Zanditon are a few more eco-friendly names in fashion.
There is an organization called FutureFashion they are working to help the fashion and home furnishing industries make the transition to sustainable materials.
“One of the highlights of FutureFashion was a stunning pink-and-yellow skirt made from corn fiber by uber-cool Heatherette designer Richie Rich.”
Rich stated that “It’s definitely something we’re going to continue toying with,” Rich told reporters. “People often perceive the fashion world as superficial, so it’s great to work with materials that are actually good for the environment. I had my doubts, but when we actually saw the fabric swatches we were blown away. They were gorgeous, and it wasn’t hard to design with them.”
