Are there any aspects of healthcare that are bad for the environment?

U.S. hospitals produce about 6,600 tonnes of waste per day.  Much of this non-hazardous waste is recyclable.  Incineration was once used but it was found to produce the carcinogenic chemical Dioxin.  Now many hospitals have reduced waste and are looking to alternative avenues of waste treatment.  However, hospitals still generate enormous amounts of waste that could otherwise have been recycled.
