There are many alternatives to nuclear power – mainly renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and geothermal energy. Renewable energy is not only better for the environment than nuclear power, but it actually makes much more economic sense, too. Studies show that to replace our reliance on fossil fuels with nuclear power, we would have to build at least 1000 new nuclear plants worldwide. This would be incredibly expensive, and the dubious economic success of past and current nuclear projects makes investors quite wary of financing new nuclear reactors. There is enough potential for developing renewable power in countries around the world to make both fossil fuels and nuclear energy unnecessary. Whatever the various pros and cons of nuclear power, no one can credibly say that it is the only or cheapest viable replacement for fossil fuels.
