Ferns and Cycads are plants that have survived for hundreds of millions of years. “Descendants of prehistoric conifers include today’s pine trees.” This includes the Araucaria bidwillii (commonly known as the bunya-bunya from Australia), and the ancient Ginkgo tree. As long as given enough water and some protection from winter freeze, these ancient plants can survive.
Ferns and cycads are the classic examples. In the tropics you can still find tree ferns, which are smaller now, but still very large compared to ferns we see in North America. Cycads are very ancient plants that were found when the dinosaurs roamed the earth.
