Are tattoos environmentally friendly?

For the most part no.  The FDA has not declared any tattoo ink safe for injection into human skin.  Generally, tattoo ink comes from industrial strength ink more suitable for car paint or inkjet printers.  Even worse, some black inks are derived from ground down animal bone or other animal by products (such as squid ink).

HOWEVER, there are tattoo artists who use vegan and vegetarian tattoo inks.  Obviously, none of the ink in vegan and vegetarian ink comes from animal products, the pigments are made from plant and other natural by products.
