The sides/bottom and top of an aluminum can are made with slightly different types of aluminum. The main part of the can is made with alloy 3104-H19 or 3004-H19, and contains about 1% manganese and 1% magnesium. The top is alloy 5182-H48, which has a higher concentration of magnesium. The tabs are also made from a slightly different alloy, but they are not pure aluminum. I am guessing your question may be based in rumors that have been circulating for years about the value of pull-tabs and different collection efforts that have sprouted up over the past years. Check out the Snopes website below for a history of these misinformed campaigns.
