Well, there are lots of different types of synthetic materials, but yes, many do pose threats to the environment. In terms of synthetic fabrics, there are a number that contain toxins. These materials can be harmful to your health, and when they are disposed of and wind up in landfills, the toxins can continue to do harm to the environment.
Some are, some are not. Depends to an extent on what you mean by “synthetic”. Is steel synthetic? It is not much different for the environment (depending on the particular alloy) than natural iron. Are synthetic diamonds worse than the blood diamonds mined at great cost to people and the environment in Africa?
Many different ways to look at this question, and consequenty, no simple or single answer.
