Not necessarily. Sustainability has to do with energy use, water use, and waste, so the size of the house is not really a factor. The best example I am aware of is a green home that was built near my hometown of Key West, FL. They incorporated south-facing windows, bahama shutters, white paint, solar panels, rain cisterns, etc., and they are almost completely off the grid without compromising with size (As you can see on the link below, the place is huge).
