Many in the surfing community are concerned with storm water runoff, because it directly effects coastal water quality. When rains bring non-point source pollution to the coast, many coastlines become un-surf-able due to the possibility of pathogen exposure from various sources present in the runoff that enters the ocean water. Many surfers are involved in public outreach and education for reducing storm water runoff, such as letting people know not to hose down their drive ways and to use ocean friendly garden landscaping.
