Are storms stronger up in the mountains?

Storms can be stronger in the mountains due to colder temperatures, meaning more snow and sleet, and the movement of air. As air moves up a mountainside, the water vapor rises with it and cools, eventually falling out of the now denser air. Winds also tend to be much stronger at higher elevations.
