Squirrels aren’t generally nocturnal. They will usually become active a couple hours before sunrise, and then in the afternoon, they will take a bit of a nap. They’ll wake back up before sunset and continue on with their squirrely business until dark, when they’ll go back to their nest for the night. During the winter, they’ll be most active in the morning, but remain in their nests if the weather is too cold.
They are simply diurnal. They go to sleep at sunset and remains there in their nests until sunrise.
