Are sponges a part of a coral reef?

Yes.  They are not considered a part of the coral, but the two live in close proximity.  Sponges often grow among the massive corals of a coral reef.  They take up massive amounts of water, filtering it, and turning dissolved material into the particles that algae and coral can take up for nutrition.
