Are spiders technically insects?

No, spiders cannot be insects for a few reasons.  For one, a classification of insects is that they must have six legs, no more, no less.  Insects have three parts: head, thorax, and abdomen.  Arachnids only have two parts: anterior and posterior; and must have eight legs.

No, spiders are arachnids, not insects. Insects are more similar to lobsters than they are to spiders, which have more legs than insects, and fewer body divisions.
