It depends. In the winter, south facing homes conserve energy by providing sunlight and heat to the house through windows. However in the summer, south facing homes can generate excess heat and cause energy expenses to rise during cooling. A properly designed roof overhang for south-facing windows is important to avoid overheating in the summer in most areas of the continental United States.
