Are some mining methods worse for the environment than others?

Strip mining is probably the method that’s worst for the environment. It’s invasive and tends to take up a large area of land, versus other methods of mining where the surface remains relatively unaffected. Chemicals that were underground and probably should have stayed there get exposed to the elements; the mine treatment process usually gives off nasty acids. No fun!
