Are smart phones better than regular cell phones for the environment?

Generally speaking, if it takes more energy to power it and you need to recharge it more, that will be worse for the environment. Similarly, if it takes more resources to build, it is more harmful for the environment.

Example: Razr cellphone vs. a Blackberry, hands down the Blackberry is larger and more complex, thus needs more resources to build, and is then less environmentally sound. Battery life will very with every individual phone, but the more often you charge it the more electricity gets wasted.
