Historically, as a rule? No. Smartphones’ purposes are to provide us with a phone that can perform many tasks other than calling, including email, web-browsing, data management, etc. However, some new smartphones are coming out that are much better for the environment…including the Samsung’s Blue Earth, which has built-in solar panels and is made from recycled water bottles.
To make a greener choice when shopping for a cell phone, I recommend looking to buy used. Used cell phones are often just as good, and they are much cheaper–not to mention that you’re keeping them out of landfills!
