For marine life and the environment, yes, cardboard is always better than plastic. The cardboard (more than likely) was made from recycled materials and when you are finished with your beer or soda, you can again recycle the cardboard bottle holder. Plastic rings, however, do not biodegrade well in the environment, and may get lost into the marine ecosystem, which can get caught around a bird or duck’s neck and cause great harm. If you do you use plastic rings (or cannot avoid them) then cut each ring so it cannot get stuck on animals’ heads.
In general, plastic is usually the worst option. Cardboard, aluminum and glass tend to be easier on the environment in terms of both production and recycling.
