Are seals a threatened species?

Definitely! The Hawaiian Monk Seal is on the endangered species list and a few kinds of ice seals are being considered to be put under listing for the Endangered Species Act. Global climate change, commercial fishing, and hunting are all reasons that many seals are a threatened species.

Mediterranean Monk Seals, native to the Mediterranean Sea, are another species of seals that are considered critically endangered by the ICUN. Only 400-350 individual seals constitute the species’ global population, a number which has been in perpetual decline for at least 30 years.

Destructive hunting and fishing practices are cited as a key reason for the Mediterranean Monk Seal’s dramatic population decline.

The number of Hawaiian monk seal is declining at a rate of about 4 percent a year and experts say pretty soon these playful creatures could become extinct if measures aren’t taken to protect their population.
