Sea lions live in large colonies and are very nurturing to their offspring. The mother sea lion and her pup often have a strong bond, communicating in barks to one another even when surrounded by a large group of sea lions. The mother will continue to nurture her young until they around 3 years of age. In addition, other sea lions have been observed “babysitting” or nurturing another mother’s pup while the mothers are away to feed.
