While scientists would like to harvest the deposits off the California coast, which were discovered by accident back in 2006, some issues stand in the way of obtaining them. First, there isn’t any technology that is powerful enough at the moment to mine the deposits. Additionally, because the deposits are only 15 miles off of the coast, they may be considered too close to the shipping lane that runs from L.A. to Long Beach.
There have been theories about using frozen methane deposits as an alternative energy source, but not enough research has been conducted on this subject.
