Scented or unscented, the most environmentally friendly candles are the organic ones. It’s not the scents that make candles unhealthy for the earth, but rather the toxins that are emitted when the candle burns.
Most conventional candles are made from paraffin wax, which is a by-product of petroleum, a non-renewable resource, which has been linked to poor indoor air quality. Buying organic candles not only supports organic farmers who practice environmentally and socially responsibility in forms of agriculture, but beeswax and soy candles both burn cleaner than petroleum-based candles. Plus they are renewable!
Some conventional wax candles may contain toxic dyes and perfumes. Paraffin-based candles emit toxic chemicals like toluene and benzene. A healthier option is soy candles, which are made from natural, biodegradable soy wax.
