Wile sea scallops occur from Cape Hatteras, North Carolina in the US to the north shores of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Newfoundland, Canada. They typically occur in waters 20-110 metres depth. Scallops become increasingly restricted to deeper waters in the southern portion of their range due to their sensitivity to high water temperatures.
Most bay scallops are farmed with large lantern-shaped nets suspended in the water, minimizing damage to the ocean floor. While a majority of bay scallops are farmed overseas, there are some New England producers.
