    Yes. Although satellites are not directly harmful to life on earth once in orbit, it takes a staggering amount of resources (and sometimes toxic coumpounds) to construct and, especially, place them into orbit.

    And depending on your definition of “environment,” they may be harmful while in orbit as well. “Space pollution” is a growing international problem. Objects that enter and stay in the earths orbit fly in all directions and travel at thousands of miles per hour. The earth now has a dense cloud of whizzing matter threatening any vessel that might try to pass. This is one of the international space stations largest concerns.
