Due to the size and bulk of buses, they are generally safer as a passenger vehicle than cars – but the term safe is relative, and if driven recklessly buses can undoubtedly be dangerous.
Buses do have one glaring issue that makes them a less safe form of travel than other modes. That is, the typical lack of seat belts. In many bus crashes passengers are thrown from the bus and onto the road sustaining significant, sometimes fatal, injuries. In many cases the use of seat belts would have greatly reduced the number of casualties.
