Are road bikes more efficient than mountain bikes?

Yes, because of a lower friction coefficient. If you’ve ever noticed the size of the tires on a road like, you’d see that they are quite thin. This means there is less surface area rubbing against the ground as you petal, thus making less friction. In rocky terrain these tires would pop immediate so mountain bikes have thick tires to cope with this problem, but in the city they are less efficient.
