There is still some support for drilling in the ANWR, but Obama still does not support it. He recently said: “I strongly reject drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge because it would irreversibly damage a protected national wildlife refuge without creating sufficient oil supplies to meaningfully affect the global market price or have a discernible impact on US energy security.” Numerous agencies, such as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Resources Defense Council, and local Alaskan tribal councils have expressed their opposition to the idea as well. Due to the President’s official stance against drilling, it is unlikely that any physical work will be started in the ANWR any time soon.
