Not necessarily. The Sequoia genus includes three of four types of redwood trees–the Giant Sequoia, the Coast redwood, and Dawn redwood. In general speech, Sequoia is taken to mean only the Giant Sequoia tree, also referred to as the Sierra redwood, so named for its range in the Sierra mountains. Redwoods can denote the species of the cypress family, which in addition to the Sequoia genus also includes the Japanese Sugi species.
