Are rechargeable devices better than the ones that use batteries?

Generally rechargeable electronics are generally better for the environment because they eliminate the need to use batteries, which cuts down the disposal of toxic materials.  Batteries contain mercury, lead, nickel and other materials that can harm the environment if improperly disposed of.  There are various battery collection programs that effectively dispose of and/or recycle batteries.
