Rechargeable batteries are safe for the environment. Part of the makeup of the best rechargeable batteries includes is nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) which improves performance and emits low toxicity in the environment. If you properly take care of your rechargeable battery, then properly dispose of if when it does die you will be helping the environment, opposed to tossing hundreds or even thousands of alkaline batteries you and toss one or two after getting their full use.
