Are raccoons really related to bears? How closely?

Some studies based on the two animals’ molecular construction indicates that the two creatures may have, indeed, shared a common ancestor. Scientists hypothesize that the genus Coatis (Nasua and Nasuella) and raccoons (Procyon) may both have descended from the genus Paranasua about 6 million years ago.
