Most canned foods are currently packaged in aluminum. It’s more malleable and cheaper than the tin-plated steel that was in use until about the 1960’s. However the alumunum is coated in a plastic inside the can to prevent the metal from leaching into the food. This coating has been linked to high levels of BPA that exceed the government standards for chemical exposure by 200 times.
