Generally, laser printers (the ones that use toners) are better for the environment than inkjet printers. Here’s why:
Inkjet-printed paper can be difficult to recycle. The ink is often hard to remove from the paper during the recycling process.
Many inkjet inks can “release volatile organic carbons”. Toner does not. There are some water-based inkjet inks that do not release such volatile carbons, but the ink is still hard to remove.
You get fewer printed pages from an inkjet cartridge then you do from a toner cartridge. So you have to use more ink, and, if you don’t refill cartridges or are unable to, more of the plastic cartridges.
