Are plates and utensils made out of corn actually good for the environment?

They are better for the environment than plastic alternatives. They decrease dependency on petroleum-derived plastics. Plastic is made from petroleum, while these plates and utensils come predominately from corn and PLA. Polylactic lacid (PLA) requires far less fossil fuel and generates fewer greenhouse gasses. Corn is also a renewable resource.

They are better for the environment, but growing corn is also very hard on the environment.  The better alternative is to use reusable plates.  The article below lists the numerous problems with converting grassland to corn fields.
