I just took a plastic soda bottle and aluminum soda can from the recycling and weighed them on a cooking scale to answer your question. The can came in at 0.8 ounces and the bottle at 0.6 ounces. So the can is heavier -provided the cap is off the bottle! When I put the cap back on the bottle, it weighed the same as the can.
I did the same test as the answerer above, and got the same results. The weights were slightly different, but the aluminum can was slightly heavier than the plastic bottle without the cap.
