Difficult for the consumer? Not typically. Today, 80 percent of Americans have access to a plastics recycling program. It is recommended that you only try to recycle plastics that are accepted by your local recycling center (they are marked with a number, 1 through 7, in a symbol on the container, and almost all recycling centers accept numbers 1 and 2). But even if you are unsure, the recycling center may be able to sort through their intake of plastic to remove the non-recyclable materials.
Recycling plastics does consume energy, but recycling centers have well-established procedures for collecting, sorting, and processing plastic materials.
