Coal burning releases more CO2 than the burning of other fossil fuels. In the US, the EPA estimates that the average coal plants releases 4.6 million metric tons of CO2 every year. There are plans being put in place to make newer, more environmentally friendly coal power plants. Scientists are also working to find ways to recapture more of the CO2 after it is released by the plant.
