Are nuclear plants actually better for the environment than coal?

In the short term yes, but in the long term definitely not. Nuclear power does not produce carbon emission and thus is neutral where it comes to global warning, but it is not sustainable or renewable. Using current technology nuclear power plants produce radioactive waste that will last hundreds of thousands of years, is destructive to the environment and to peoples health, and we have no way of disposing of. Furthermore, nuclear power uses uranium which must be mined out of the ground much like coal with all the environmental and social repercussions that that entails.
