The ocean’s plankton stand to be severely threatened by global warming. As the oceans grow warmer, currents that bring nutrients from the cold lower waters of the ocean to the surface will tend to be disrupted, with more warmer, lighter water simply sitting on top of the colder layers, and less mixing occurring between deep and near-surface waters. Most plankton depend on ocean mixing to bring nutrients from the depths of the seas up near the surface, where plankton can use it. For this reason, the ocean’s plankton and the hundreds of food chains that depend on plankton depend very much on us stabilizing the world climate.
