On a large scale, all three animals are degrading to the environment, requiring acres of land for pen space and/or creating tons of fecal waste, which can threaten the quality of streams and other water sources. However, if you plan on raising a small amount on your family owned farm, chickens require much less land than cows, and consume much less food and water than pigs. Raising chickens also requires less energy, and they don’t release as much methane as cattle, which can add to the effects of global warming.
