Are pigeons an invasive species and a problem?

YES!  The common pigeon is one of many species of birds (about 10% of all birds found in the U.S.) that were introduced to the area – i.e., not native.  The pigeon is the most famous of these invasive bird species in our country, as huge numbers of pigeons poop everywhere, destroy crops, and carry tons of diseases.  Some reports have shown that pigeon control costs the country around one BILLION dollars every year.

Pigeons are probably one of the most notorious invasive species.  Their damage extends beyond the animal population.  Their feces are highly acidic, meaning it can damage and corrode building materials.  Damage from pigeon droppings can exceed $10,000/year.  They are also a common transportation for more than 50 human and livestock diseases.
