There are about 37 types of petunia. There are native to South America. Two types, the white-flowered and purple-flowered, were introduced to Europe in the 1800s and became the parents to many subsequent hybrid species.
Not to North America. Petunias are native to South America, discovered by the explorer James Tweedie who sent species to Paris in 1823 and then to the Glasgow Botanical Gardens in 1931.
