This is an excellent question, and the answer is quite debatable.
When it comes to topically applied cosmetics, we may think that as long as something is on the outside of our skin, we are safe. However, we must also remember that our skin is porous, and some things can affect not just the skin cells themselves, but also the subdermal layers as well.
Additionally, many cosmetics have other harmful effects. For example, a lot of hair sprays are not safe to inhale. The manufacturers may claim that they are safe in small amounts, but have long-term health effect studies been conducted?
I honestly believe some people do get sick from cosmetics, but proving it may be rather difficult.
