Are people driving more miles in their new cars from cash for clunkers?

While I could not find any sources of hard data on the number of miles driven by the cars traded in for the clunkers, some political calculations show that the program has actually resulted in an additional 289 gallons of gas being consumed per car traded in. This is a direct result from the fact people tend to drive new cars more than older cars, and especially now with the additional knowledge that their new car is more fuel efficient (and therefore less costly) than their old clunker.
