The best choice for the environment is to use porcelain (reusable) dishes and wash them in the dishwasher. Although dishwashers use energy and electricity, the water can at least be treated and reused. Paper plates may be convenient but they require trees to be cut down. The plates will eventually end up in landfills where they will never fully degrade. If you are going to a picnic or would just prefer to use paper plates on a occasion, buy the ones made from recycled paper or potatoes. EarthShell produces plates and bowls made from renewable corn and potato starch mixed with abundant limestone – you can find them at Walmart and Target.
