Are solar panels cheaper the thinner they are?

In principle, yes. The high cost of solar panels is tied to the cost of the silicon that is used to make it. The silicon has to be of high quality which is generally rare. Thinner panels would use less silicon and thus be less expensive. Unfortunately, many thin film panels are not as efficient meaning you need more thus losing the cost benefit. However these new thin film panels by Nanosolar, if they live up to the hype, may be a solution to this problem.
