Are online editions of newspapers more “green” if you have to use electricity to read them?

Yes, it will always take a baseline amount of energy to create a paper newspaper. It will take energy to cut down the trees to make the paper. It will take more energy to mash the pulp and form paper. It takes more energy still to run the printing pressed to make that blank paper a newspaper. That doesn’t include the pollution created by trucks and cars driving around delivering newspapers.

Even though operating a computer takes energy, the net impact of reading online newspapers is positive for the environment.
