Green Mountain Coffee company popularized the convenient K-cup single use coffee cup system. The coffee this company used is 27% fair-trade, but the cups are made of petroleum-based plastic, which is environmentally unfriendly and unable to be recycled. With 2.5 million K-cups being brewed daily, that is a lot of unnecessary trash. The company is aware of this problem and is endeavoring to find ways to combat it. Their fleet is partly biodielsel and they are purchasing carbon offset. Currently, the most environmentally sound way to make coffee is still french press, which doesn’t even use a filter.
