The Oil Slick represents the concentration of oil in water.  So in essence, yes, the oil in the slick has the potential to kill animals.  The oil can be ingested, which is poisonous, the oil can coat the feathers and gills of animals and prevents them from swimming, flying, breathing, moving properly and can lead to death.  There are also long term affects of oil in the ocean that are hard to predict the overall impact on animals, however it is proven that long term exposure to oil will harm wildlife.
